New York is the undisputed centre of the art community in the United States and globally. The course "contemporary art in New York" includes scholars, curators, and Sotheby's own specialists whose outstanding academic and professional credentials personify the incomparable breadth and depth of the course. Sotheby's will help Sophie examine the growth of the New York contemporary art scene, its ideas, artists and key players. Sophie will also visit cutting edge galleries, leading museums, private collections and visit the behind the scenes at Sotheby's.

Contemporary Art in New York  Dr. Melanie Marino.

Dr. Marino received her PhD from Cornell University, an MA from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University and a BA from Columbia University.   Her research focuses on conceptual art and photography and she has written on the work of Rachel Whiteread, Gabriel Orozco, Daniel Buren, and Vito Acconci, among many others. She has extensive teaching experience in the field of contemporary art and has also been a Curatorial Assistant at the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Whitney Museum of American art. 

Melanie has also received several fellowships including a Lila Acheson Wallace Fellowship at New York University; a Helena Rubenstein Fellowship at the Whitney Museum of American Art; a Sage Fellowship at Cornell University and a Fellowship from the Center for Twenty-First Century Studies at The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
