THERE IS A BACK STORY TO THIS ARTWORK.........
The addiction crisis is terrifying, and many people don’t comprehend appropriate opioid use. Taking pain medicine to maximize one’s ability to be productive and to sustain enriching relationships is very different than the disease of addiction. There is a genuine and devastating epidemic of opiate abuse in this country. The student for this artwork (an adult with back pain) used the Sophie Mill School of Art Visual art program to move towards 'seeing life' again. Over the course of a year, this (adult) student is able to drive, laugh, plan for the future, and maintain relationships. With the use of mindfulness in painting and observation, the power of the mind allows the person to move away from extreme pain for (short) moments. Over time, the joy of painting settles into the memory. Over time, observational skills come back. Over time, logic and perspective comes back. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS PROGRAM IS IN KEEPING WITH DOCTORS SUPERVISION. IT IS NOT A PROGRAM AWAY FROM MEDICAL ADVICE.
